Our History

1950s

Bungan Beach Surf Life Saving Club began in the 1950s when a dedicated group of local volunteers recognised the need for organised patrols on the beach. With very limited equipment and a simple, hand-built clubhouse, the club relied on community support and fundraising to get started. Early members patrolled with basic boards and surfboats, laying the foundation for a strong culture of teamwork, service, and commitment to beach safety.

1960s

The 1960s brought growth in membership and an increase in structured lifesaving training. As the beach became more popular, patrol operations expanded, equipment improved, and the club developed a visible presence in the local community. Fundraising events, social gatherings, and a stronger patrol roster helped establish the club’s place in the Northern Beaches surf lifesaving movement.

1980s

The 1980s marked a period of recognition, professionalism, and competitive success. The club celebrated members who received lifesaving awards, improved first-aid and rescue capability, and built a strong club culture through social events and teamwork. Increased female participation on patrols and in surf sport competition reflected the club’s growth and inclusiveness.

1970s

During the 1970s, the club became more competitive and modernised its approach to lifesaving. Equipment upgrades, improved facilities, and growing junior participation supported a rise in surf sports involvement. Bungan members proudly represented the club at carnivals, while continuing to strengthen patrol standards and community engagement.

1990s

In the 1990s, the club embraced modern lifesaving practices, expanding rescue equipment to include more boards and IRB support. Youth programs strengthened, competition success continued, and training standards evolved with new technology and techniques. This decade helped shape Bungan Beach SLSC into a modern, community-focused surf lifesaving club.

Today

Today, Bungan Beach SLSC remains proud, passionate, and community-driven. Volunteers continue to patrol the beach every season, train the next generation of lifesavers, and compete in surf sports while upholding the traditions and spirit established by the founding members. The club continues to grow, innovate, and serve the community — always with safety, teamwork, and service at its heart.
